
How to Choose/Read Sewing Patterns, with Shannon Faulstick

How to Read a Sewing Pattern: Sunday March 12, 2-5pm. $35 per person

You want to sew a garment or home decor item but you cringe at the thought of figuring out all those instructions?This is the class for you! Are you a visual learner and a beginning sewist? When you look at pattern envelopes do you feel your head spinning at the terms and fabric suggestions? Do you learn best when you see something demonstrated?
In this class you will bring your pattern (or purchase one in our shop at a 15% class discount - we will assist your) and I will talk you through, as well as demonstrate, what you need to know to get started reading any sewing pattern. (For this class it is best to have a pattern with simple lines and uncomplicated design details). If you have fabric, bring that as well (or you may purchase our fabrics at 15% discount), because we will beginning pinning our pattern pieces to our fabrics. No need to bring your sewing machine. We have machines you can use to begin putting your new skills to use. Sewing machine experience helpful. You may not be sewing at all, as laying out your pattern, and cutting out your fabrics is the most labor-intensive and crucial part of garment sewing.
Participants will have the opportunity for furthering their skills in future pattern workshops.
You will learn:
- how to choose a pattern
- how to choose fabrics
- which size is your true size
- about tailoring marks
- how to choose the correct pieces for the view you want
- how to place pattern pieces on your fabrics
NOTE: This is not a beginner sewing class. This workshop is focusing on choosing, reading and pattern interpretation.
STANDARD POLICIES: Class attendees receive a 15% discount on all day-of-class purchases! As with all our classes, you may register online through Eventbrite, or in person in our shop. We (or the instructors) set minimums on most of our classes. If for some reason a class does not “make”, you will be notified and will receive a full refund. For project-based workshops and classes, you will begin your project in class; however, depending upon your skill level and speed, you may or may not be able to complete your projects in the class time frame. You are always invited back to complete your project by calling the shop and scheduling a time.
